Case study: Phoenix Energy

Aligning with Phoenix Energy’s ‘Environmental Education’ pillar of responsibility, Sport Changes Life developed a distinctive, enjoyable learning experience by integrating physical activity with classroom-based workshops. During the practical sessions, no sports equipment was used, to deliver the message of repurposing and to advocate against excessive consumption in society.

The initiative reached 15 primary schools across Northern Ireland, delivering a sport-led intervention to Primary 7 students aged 10 to 11. Each session was a 30 minute classroom-based workshop followed by a 50 minute practical session.

Learning outcomes

By the end of each session students should:

  • Understand that Phoenix Energy support the programme as part of their commitment to environmental education.
  • Have increased knowledge and understanding of environmental issues.
  • Have a greater understanding of practical skills for environmental conservation.

The impact

576 pupils took part between January and December 2024.

  • 95% (547 pupils) understood that Phoenix Energy supported the programme as part of their environmental education commitment.
  • 80% (461 pupils) had increased knowledge and understanding of environmental issues.
  • 93% (536 pupils) had a greater understanding of practical skills for environmental conservation.
